(Miami, FL January 3, 2018) - City Manager Emilio T. Gonzalez has appointed Joseph Ruiz as Zoning Administrator and Director of the Zoning Office.
“Joe Ruiz has served Mayor Francis Suarez and the City of Miami with distinction,” said City Manager Emilio Gonzalez. "His experience, legal skills, leadership and commitment to the City of Miami make him a value-added Director of the Zoning Department and Zoning Administrator. I expect great things from Joe.”
Joseph A. Ruiz joined the Office of the Mayor in 2017, where he coordinated the execution of the Mayor’s strategic initiatives and handled the day-to-day management of the office. Prior to that, he served as Chief of Staff for then Commissioner Suarez’s District 4 Office, after serving as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Miami. At the City Attorney’s Office, he was assigned to the Land Use/Transactional Division where he practiced public finance, taxation, land use and zoning, and general municipal law. He further served as legal counsel to the Urban Development Review Board, the Coconut Grove and Wynwood Business Improvement Districts, and the Wynwood Design Review Committee.
“Joe has all the attributes that make up a great Zoning Director. He is honest, intelligent, and a team player,” said Mayor Suarez. “I had the honor of working with him for almost two years and I can personally attest to his qualifications.”
Prior to joining the City of Miami, Mr. Ruiz served as the General Counsel to the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser and as a legislative aide to Lieutenant Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera, then member of the Florida House of Representatives.
"I am deeply honored and excited about the opportunity to work with the Zoning Office,” Mr. Ruiz said. “I am looking forward to continuing down the path of public service and building upon the progress made by this great team to best serve our city and residents.”
Mr. Ruiz earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Florida State University. He later went on to receive his Juris Doctor degree from Florida International University College of Law.
