(Miami, FL January 23, 2019) - Today, City of Miami welcomed eight fellows from the Harvard Kennedy School who traveled to the Magic City to participate in a Climate Adaptation Round Table. The fellows traveled to Miami to learn about the innovative and forward leaning measures the City is taking to understand and mitigate the effects of climate change. The discussion presented by various Department Directors focused on the city's climate adaptation infrastructure plans and strategies.

“I’m proud of our City staff for taking the initiative to host this important discussion with a group of young leaders, which may set the foundation for their future by enhancing their practical expertise to be able to address climate-related challenges and find solutions to accelerate adaption in their home communities,” expressed City Manager Emilio Gonzalez.

The Center for Public Leadership and Louis Bacon Environmental Leadership Fellows traveled to Miami to learn more about the relationship between development and climate adaptation as well as the current plans for the Miami Forever Bond. The two-hour discussion touched on the City's overall strategy, planning standards, storm water infrastructure, the Miami Forever Bond, and others.

The students’ professional background and academic work focuses primarily in environmental policies that relate to transportation, energy, access to capital for clean energy transition, nature conservation, sustainable development, renewable energy development, global sustainability, carbon emissions reduction and clean water.

As a global leader in climate adaption, the City of Miami will continue to collaborate both internally and externally with other stakeholders to effectively create a more resilient future for Miami. Next month, the 8th Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki-moon will meet for the first time with Mayor Suarez - only US Mayor selected for the Global Commission on Adaptation.
