(Miami, FL September 6, 2019) - Today, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and City Manager Emilio Gonzalez joined Miami Dade College (MDC) Interim President Dr. Rolando Montoya to present fifty MDC students with the inaugural Eduardo J. Padrón Completion Scholarship, named for MDC President Emeritus Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón. The City recently created the scholarship to provide financial assistance to deserving MDC students in their final year of study.
“Dr. Padrón has empowered generations of our community’s youth through education,” said Mayor Suarez. “Today, we carry on his legacy by presenting these students with not only scholarships, but Eduardo J. Padrón Scholarships, which serve as an invaluable resource in our mission to create a pathway to prosperity for everyone in the City of Miami.”
The fifty scholarships presented to MDC students today come just over a month after the City of Miami announced a $50,000 gift as part of the Mayor's Pathway to Prosperity Initiative to create a scholarship fund in honor of MDC President Emeritus Padrón and his fifty-year legacy at the College. The funds support students who are close to completing their degrees or certificate programs, enabling them to focus on their studies and reduce financial pressure to work full-time.
“Education is the great equalizer in America, but too often, financial challenges prevent capable students from completing their degrees," said City Manager Gonzalez. "This scholarship bridges that financial gap for worthy students, while honoring Miami’s great champion of college education for all, Dr. Padron.”
Today's scholarship presentation at MDC's Wolfson Campus in the heart of downtown Miami kicked off I AM MDC Day, which celebrates the founding of the College in 1960 and raises funds for students.
“We put the City’s early I AM MDC Day gift to work immediately, and it was special for students to meet the city officials who made their scholarship possible,” said Mark Cole, vice president of advancement and executive director of Miami Dade College Foundation. “The ceremony was the perfect start to an important day for MDC as we ask for the community’s support so more students have the opportunity to achieve their dreams.”
