(Miami, FL - November 18, 2020) - This week, Miami City Manager Art Noriega named Cesar Garcia-Pons, AICP, LEED AP, as the City's new Planning Director. Mr. Garcia-Pons officially begins his new role on Monday, December 7, 2020, and brings a long, successful track record of public and private sector planning work to one of the City's most consequential departments.

"As Miami continues to grow and transform at a rapid clip, the need for strategic short- and long term city planning has taken on even more importance," said City Manager Noriega. "In Cesar, we have a highly qualified planning professional who has been involved in planning for Miami's growth from both sides of the equation - on the development side and on the regulatory side. We're excited for him to join our team."

Garcia-Pons joins the City of Miami following several years of running his own consultancy, Garcia-Pons+Associates, where he worked on a range of neighborhood redevelopment, preservation and community revitalization projects throughout the Greater Miami area. His private sector experience extends to urban design/planning and site design practices for top Miami architecture & engineering firms Perkins+Will and EDAW/AECOM.

His private sector work is complemented by extensive public sector planning experience. Mr. Garcia-Pons served as the City of Miami's Deputy Director of Planning and Zoning from 2013 to 2015, a role that allowed him to gain a strong understanding of the City's Miami21 Zoning Code. Prior to that, he was part of the Planning, Design and Transportation group at the Miami DDA, an autonomous City of Miami agency dedicated to the development and improvement of Downtown Miami. That experience and his familiarity with the City will serve Garcia-Pons well in his new role.

Mr. Garcia-Pons earned a degree in architecture from the University of Miami School of Architecture, where he also taught for ten years. He also taught planning and design at Nova Southeastern University's Huizenga School of Business. Garcia-Pons is a member of numerous professional and community organizations and boards.
