In September 2017, Hurricane Irma caused extensive damage to Dinner Key Marina. As the largest publicly-owned marina in Florida with a long history, the City of Miami prioritized repair and upgrades to the marina. With the restoration of the Marina now complete, the City has taken a proactive approach to preparing for future natural hazards. With the award of a grant from FEMA for mitigation of coastal hazards, the City of Miami has procured a team to provide design and permitting services for the development of coastal structures to be constructed at the spoil islands that would further increase the resilience of the marina to coastal storms. The main objectives of this project are to:

  • Protect the Marina
  • Develop comprehensive island shoreline protection measures through armoring and/or nature-based solutions
  • Increase overall resilience and protection the islands offer to the marina

By undertaking this effort, the City of Miami will provide additional protection to Dinner Key Marina in the event of a storm. The City may also explore options for increased recreational opportunities on the Spoil Islands within.

Project Boundaries:

The project area considers the spoil islands immediately surrounding Dinner Key Marina, starting at the north with a breakwater adjacent to Pier 1 at Dinner Key Marina, Island C, and Island D, and Island E. The protection currently considers armored escarpments on the spoil islands and the breakwater to mitigate the effects of storm surge and storm-driven waves. Further optimization of the protection schemes may consider alternate layouts, configurations and locations for the protection of the marina as the Phase I analyses are conducted.
