Downtown Miami

The Community Planning Section is responsible for neighborhood and comprehensive planning that seeks to improve the quality of life of the City of Miami’s neighborhoods and its residents. The staff applies the resources of the City and its departmental expertise, in a multi-disciplinary team effort, to assist neighborhood residents and businesses in improving and stabilizing the physical, social, and economic qualities of neighborhood life. Paramount to the process is public involvement.

The Section works directly with the community to address their issues, as well as assists other city departments in their efforts to improve the quality of neighborhoods. Along with this, the section develops neighborhood master plans and is responsible for the development and updating for the Miami Comprehensive Neighborhood Plan (MCNP). The MCNP is a guide to the future development of the City, and fulfills the City’s responsibilities under Florida’s Growth Management laws.

The Section utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for data analysis and produces informational mapping needs of the various city departments, offices, and the public. Planning applications include zoning and future land use reviews, community-based residential facility analysis, public facility locations and analysis, neighborhood demographics and socio-economic analysis.
