City of Miami Police Awarded $11 Million in Stimulus Money

The City of Miami police department is getting more than $11 million in stimulus money, the White House announced on Tuesday. The money will pay for 50 new officers for the city for three years, including salaries and benefits.

The money for Miami Police is just part of $1 billion in grants to fund the hiring and rehiring of law enforcement officers all across the country under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. That includes more than $87 million in grants to fund the hiring and rehiring of 428 law enforcement officers in Florida.             read more »

U.S. EPA Expedites Economic Recovery Funding to Reduce Diesel Emissions, Create Jobs in Miami, Florida

In a move that stands to create jobs, boost local economies, reduce diesel emissions and protect human health and the environment for people of the City of Miami, FL, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $731,850 to Miami to reduce diesel emissions from existing garbage trucks. This clean diesel project will create jobs while protecting Miami’s air quality.

"This grant is a great investment in environmental protection and will provide long-term economic benefits for Florida,” said Stan Meiburg, EPA Acting Administrator in Atlanta. “This funding will go a long way in helping to bolster the economy and protect public health and the environment by creating green jobs that improve air quality.” read more »

Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett joined Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and City Manager Pete Hernandez today to celebrate the Preserve America Community designation awarded to Miami, Florida.  Scarlett presented a designation certificate signed by First Lady Laura Bush, Honorary Chair of Preserve America, in recognition of the community’s work to preserve, protect and celebrate the unique history and heritage it contains. read more »

 

The American Express "Root For Our City" Challenge Brings Trees to Miami

American Express recently concluded their Root For Our City Challenge, an initiative to help make eight U.S. cities cleaner, greener and more beautiful.

“Trees make a huge difference in our cities. They help to offset carbon emissions, beautify an area and create a positive impact on the local economy,” said Kathy King, vice president of marketplace development, American Express Merchant Services. Miami Police Department (MPD) to Implement Public Service Aide (PSA) Technology Project with Funding from the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG)

One of the biggest challenges for the MPD is providing police officers and support personnel with adequate resources to perform their duties. One One of the biggest challenges for the MPD is providing police officers and support personnel with adequate resources to perform their duties. One of MPD’s goals is to provide its employees with the technology and equipment necessary to enhance and improve their performance on an everyday basis.  The addition of laptop computers to the vehicles provided for PSAs will not only improve their productivity, but also increase the accuracy and speed in which they obtain vital information.
