Award Name:       Elevate Miami

Funding Sources and Amounts:  John and James L. Knight Foundation ($250,000), and AT&T Foundation ($125,000)

The City of Miami was recently awarded $375,000 for the Elevate Miami Rites of Passage, giving students, parents, and seniors free access to technology, a competitive edge in the world, and lifelong learning opportunities.

Funding Source and Amount:    U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

In a historic win, the City of Miami recently became the fist ever municipality awarded a Compassion Capital Fund grant. The award provides $500,000 per year for three years from the federal government. In cooperation with local partners, the City of Miami provides capacity-building technical assistance and sub-awards to several local community and faith-based organizations.

The City of Miami was recently awarded $245,093 for the Miami Homeless Assistance Program.

Award Name:       Office of Sustainable Initiatives

Funding Source:    Home Depot Foundation

The City of Miami was recently awarded $1,000,000 from the Home Depot Foundation for the Miami Green Lab and the Green Miami Campaign. The Green Lab will be a resource for the community to learn about new technologies in green design by providing a space and information that will help shape a greener future for South Florida. The Green Miami campaign will increase community awareness of the benefits of trees and how to protect them.

Funding Sources and Amounts:    South Florida HIDTA ($22,500); U.S. Department of Justice ($291,347), and Florida Department of Law Enforcement ($122,500)

The City of Miami was recently awarded $436,347 in total grant dollars for police programs, to combat gangs, drug trafficking, sex offenders, and to purchase life-saving equipment.

 Other Accomplishments

The City of Miami was a Finalist in the 2008 U.S. Conference of Mayors’ City Livability Awards for Miami 21. Miami 21 represents the “Miami of the 21st Century” and entails a holistic approach to land use and urban planning. It will provide a clear vision for the City that will be supported by specific guidelines and regulations so that future generations will reap the benefits of well-balanced neighborhoods and rich quality of life.

 The City partnered with the Black Police Precinct Museum to secure a $6,000 grant form the Dade Community Foundation to catalog their museum collection.

 The City was selected as the location for the 2008 National AmeriCorps Week’s Closing Ceremony, where hundreds of volunteers from around the country engaged in planting 1,000 trees at Virginia Key Beach Park.

 The City recruited, trained, and placed 18 VISTA members in non-profit organizations throughout the City. In addition to resource development, VISTAs helped coordinate numerous native tree plantings, Thanksgiving basket giveaways, holiday toy drives, anti-violence events, job placements, ex-offender job preparation services, recruitment fairs, financial literacy events, and volunteer projects.
