Transportation in Miami
Transportation
accounts for approximately 40% of the City’s
greenhouse gas emissions. Miami is working to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions from through
five strategies: (1) reducing vehicle miles
traveled; (2) increasing fuel efficiency of
vehicles; 3) switching to less carbon intensive
fuel sources; (4) improving the accessibility to
mass transit; and (5) encouraging bicycling and
walking through the built environment.
City Fleet
The City is
reducing vehicle emissions from the City’s fleet
through the purchase of hybrids and more fuel
efficient vehicles. In 2008, the City passed a
Green Fleets Ordinance to reduce fuel
consumption and the efficiency of the fleet by
5% each year.
Bicycle Action
Committee
The Bike Action Committee is a working committee
of the City's Green Commission. The Committee is
developing a Bike Action Plan for the City to
increase total bicycle lane miles within the
city as well as bike safety and access.
Commuting
The City has
launched a partnership with
South Florida Commuter Services to promote
mass transportation and commuting, including
providing discount metro passes to employees and
priority parking for a van pool in the MRC
garage, and new covered bike racks. |
