Energy in Miami

Fifty-two percent of the City of Miami's carbon dioxide emissions (the primary human cause of global warming) are due to electricity usage. The first step in reducing our emissions is to increase electricity efficiencies.

City Buildings

The City of Miami is promoting energy efficiency and conservation within its own buildings, including auditing and updating existing buildings to improve their energy efficiency.

  • City Hall now has four demonstration solar panels and an efficiency retrofit of its lighting (donated through a partnership with Ecomedia) that has increased the buildings energy efficiency by 9%.

  • In 2008, the City passed a Green Purchasing Ordinance for all city departments that requires products to meet Energy Star guidelines.

Community

  • The City is working with community partners to retrofitted homes to be energy efficient and providing CFL light bulb giveaways.
