The Republic of Haiti celebrates its 200th year of independence (January 1,1804-January 1,2004). Arthur E. Teele, Jr. authored legislation to commemorate and celebrate this historic event by creating the Haitian Bicentennial Committee.

The Committee, chair headed by Jean-Robert Lafortune, was established to garner broad participation and input of the yearlong series of activities for the City of Miami as it relates to the Bicentennial of Haiti. This important Bicentennial year will honor not only Haitian independence and the birth of the Haitian nation, but the continuing struggle for freedom that is shared by people of all races, everywhere.

The Bicentennial committee welcomes everyone to join in this yearlong celebration. We invite you to visit our website to find out information about celebrations, festivals, special events and cultural happenings that will be taking place in honor of freedom. Learn about the history of Haiti and about Little Haiti, a thriving Haitian community in the City of Miami.
