Police Officer Requirements


Prior to becoming a police officer, the following requirements must be met:

  • Proof of passing score on the FBAT, CJBAT or FDLE police examination in the area of Law Enforcement. Click here for more information on the FBAT.

  • Must be at least 19 years of age

  • High School Diploma, GED or higher degree from schools accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education

  • Valid driver's license from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) at time of application, provided that prior to appointment a valid State of Florida Class E or higher Driver's License is submitted to the Miami Police Department's Recruitment and Selection Unit. Driving Records will be checked for validity.

  • Must be a United States citizen

  • All applicants must have at least 20/30 vision in each eye with correction and must be binocular and monocular of 20/100 vision in each eye without correction (glasses or contacts). Depth and color perception must be within normal limits.

  • Per Florida Statute 943.13, applicants must not have been convicted of any felony nor misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Applicants with convictions for driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages or narcotics will be automatically disqualified. Criminal history may disqualify applicants.

In addition to meeting the documentation requirements listed above, all applicants must satisfy the following criteria to be considered for appointment:

  • Physical Agility Test

  • Stringent background investigation including Criminal Records Check

  • Fingerprint Check

  • Polygraph Examination

  • Toxicology Screen (At the candidate's expense, providing the screening results are negative, the fee will be reimbursed)

  • Post-Offer Medical Examination

*Applicants must have a passing score on the FBAT, CJBAT or FDLE police examination in the area of law enforcement prior to attending orientation and BRING PROOF OF A PASSING SCORE AT THE TIME OF ORIENTATION. Proof is not required to be uploaded at the time of application.
