The FEC Corridor is an inner-city area of the
City of Miami consisting of over 2000 acres.
This corridor is comprised of a mix of
industrial, warehouse, commercial and
residential uses with a significant number of
vacant parcels and underutilized buildings. The
Corridor was the subject of a redevelopment
study initiated in January of 2000 by the City
of Miami through a Task Force comprised of
government officials, business leaders,
community non-profits and the real estate
development community. The focus of the Task
Force was to identify and facilitate
redevelopment opportunities within the corridor
by facilitating private sector investment in
underutilized areas. As a result of numerous
meetings with community stake-holders and
leaders in the community, the Task Force
released a report on their “Findings and
Recommendations” in September of 2000. The City
then selected Florida International University
to head up a consultant team of urban planners,
architects engineers and GIS experts to develop
a comprehensive strategic redevelopment plan
that would focus on Economic Development,
Transportation, Land Use and Urban Design.
The Planning Advisory Board recommended
approval of the final draft of the FEC Corridor
Strategic Redevelopment Plan by May 2002. This
action would prompt the City to take an active
role in implementing the recommendations of the
plan. A series of resolutions were presented and
approved by the City Commission which directed
the City to commence major implementation of
various initiatives such as: Transportation,
Streetscape and Open Space, Economic
Development, Housing, Planning and Zoning,
Historic Preservation and Conservation and
Funding.
The City has commenced the implementation of the
initiatives, specifically as it relates to
Economic Development. Florida International
University has been contracted to perform the
Target Industry Analysis of the furniture,
media, plastics and fabricated metal sectors.
They will also be collecting data as it relates
to the tenure of the existing tenants in the
area. This will allow for us to analyze the
impact of future development in the area.
Other initiatives, such as the Regulating Plan
and Historic Preservation Initiative are
underway. The City also issued a Request for
Qualifications (RFQ) through the Purchasing
Department for a financing, marketing, and
transportation plan.
