The Hot Spot Campaign
The City of Miami, in partnership with People United to Lead the Struggle for Equality (P.U.L.S.E.) has launched the “Hot Spot” campaign to combat crime and illegal dumping in District 5.

The “Hot Spot” campaign gives citizens the opportunity to anonymously report criminal activities using the Hot Spot card. By using the postage paid “Hot Spot” card, citizens are not required to provide any identifiable information. They simply fill it out, and place it in a nearby mailbox. During a previous Hot Spot campaign in 1996, the City of Miami and Miami Dade Police departments made over 150 arrests and confiscated $500,000 in drugs. Information on the Hot Spot campaign can be picked up at any City of Miami Net office in District 5.

Unite for Peace
Unite for Peace is a public awareness campaign driven by youth to address non-violence and peace in the community. The campaign utilizes local artist and athletes to promote an anti-gun violence message to youth and their families to “Unite for Peace by Choosing Life over Death”.

The campaign was launched in 2006 after an alarming number of young people were senselessly murdered by gun violence in the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County and neighboring cities. Activities include a yearly roundtable forum; on-going Public Service Announcements (PSA) renouncing gun violence by promoting peace and a series of door to door marketing that includes the dissemination of: bumper stickers, door knob hangers, yard signs and street banners throughout the community.

Homeowner and Neighborhood Enhancement Project Grants
Provides homeowner and neighborhood associations in District 5 the opportunity to apply for mini grants of up to $1,000. The grants can be used to assist with projects that reduce crime, clean neighborhoods and promote our communities.

The Hospitality Institute
The Hospitality Institute is a collaborative effort between Hilton Hotels, Veterans Employment Transition Services (VETS), Miami Dade College and Camillus House that connects Overtown residents with careers in the hospitality industry. These careers can range from: front desk, banquet services, maintenance, housekeeping, laundry services, supervisory and administrative services.

Operated by VETS, the Hospitality Institute provides a two day training program for participants; followed by the opportunity to meet with employers with job openings. Funded by the City of Miami’s CRA, the Hospitality Institute holds training sessions and career workshops once a month at Greater Bethel AME Church in Overtown, located at 245 NW 8th St. For more information on the Hospitality Institute, contact Jeanne Westphal at (305) 329-2845.

Soul Lives in the City
The Soul Lives in the City campaign focuses on encouraging residents to live in District 5.If you are considering coming back to the neighborhood or a current resident interested in a new and affordable place to call home, The Carrie Meek Foundation in partnership with the City of Miami and the Liberty City Community Revitalization Trust is looking for you. Within the next 18 months over 1000 new apartments for low income families will be ready for occupancy. In fact, some of them are already under construction.

Seniors First
Seniors First puts our elders first by providing food and information on health, housing and emergency disaster services to senior citizens in District 5.Each year; the Office of Commissioner Spence-Jones presents The Seniors First Hurricane Readiness Expo for senior citizens in District 5. The Hurricane expo provides senior citizens with information needed to be better prepared during the Hurricane Season.

Project Empower
Project Empower provides assistance to small businesses in District 5. The program provides needs assessment for small businesses, technical assistance from local agencies such as NANA and FANM Haitian and façade enhancements. Up to $10,000 is available to assist local businesses from the Department of Community Development.

Lilies of the Valley
Lilies of the Valley is a mentorship program aimed at assisting homeless women from the Lotus House and Sommerville Residences (transitional housing for homeless women). “The Lilies” are a multi-cultural cross section of professional women from across Miami-Dade County who are given the charge to act as mentors and role models for the homeless and transitioning women in Overtown. Their mentorship is designed to create hope and opportunities for the women they mentor and implement a support system that will assist these women on their journey from homelessness to economic self-sufficiency.

Art Over Miami
Art over Miami provides exposure and job opportunities for local artist in the community. The program gives local artist the opportunity to develop and maintain working relationships with developers, lobbyist, architects and major stakeholders in the community.
