Commissioner
Richard P. Dunn II was appointed to the City of Miami
Commission on January 26, 2010, to represent District 5,
which includes Overtown, Liberty City, Little Haiti,
Buena Vista and Wynwood.
Prior to his appointment, Commissioner Dunn served as
the President of People United to Lead the Struggle for
Equality (P.U.L.S.E) from May 2006 to 2009, chairman of
the Neighbors United for Housing Task Force from January
to October 2007 and the President of the
African-American Council of Christian Clergy from
October 2002 to 2007.He is currently the Senior Pastor
at Faith Community Baptist Church.
Commissioner Dunn is no stranger to politics; in 1996 he
was appointed to the City of Miami Commission, making
him the youngest African-American to serve as a City of
Miami Commissioner. Some of his accomplishments include:
establishing single member districts in the City of
Miami, organizing the largest Boycott in Miami-Dade
County history over Miami-Dade School Board’s decision
to overlook Dr. T.S. Greer for Superintendent who was
African-American and helping to build the first detached
single-family homes in Miami-Dade County history by a
black church / Community Development Corporation (CDC).
Commissioner Dunn is currently a member of: the Metro
Miami Action Plan Board, the Baptist Ministers’ Council
of Miami and Vicinity, the African-American Council of
Christian Clergy, the NAACP, P.U.L.S.E. and the Omega
Psi Phi Fraternity. He has also served as a member of
the City of Miami Zoning Board, Dade County Code
Enforcement Board and the Civilian Investigative Panel.
Additionally, he has spoken at over 100 churches,
schools and community functions. And has received more
than 50 awards for religious and community service.
Commissioner Dunn was born in New York and moved to
Miami with his family as a young child. He lived in the
Overtown and Liberty City areas where he attended Miami
Northwestern Senior High School and graduated at the top
of his class. He later went on to receive a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Business Management at Central
State University in Wilberforce, Ohio and a Master of
Divinity Degree in Counseling and Pastoral Care at the
Interdenominational Theological Center (I.T.C.)
Morehouse School of Religion in Atlanta Georgia. He is
currently working towards his Doctorate Degree in
Ministry.
Commissioner Dunn is the founder of the Word of Life
Missionary Baptist Church and Cathedral of Hope Church
in Miami, Florida. He has been married to his wife,
Daphne Dunn for over 20 years, and has two sons Richard
P. Dunn III and Brandon Dunn.
