Little Santo Domingo

Little Santo Domingo

I take pride in my prior years of service, when commissioners were elected city wide, as well as my current tenure where I was elected by the district residents. In the past I forged a plan to develop the Little Havana area as a city wide commissioner. Today Little Havana is major tourist attraction and the home of Viernes Culturales/ Cultural Fridays, as well as a venue for up and coming artists in the Latin community. I am currently working on a concept, with the assistance of a public private partnership, to create a little Santo Domingo in District one. I envision the same success in District 1 that I was able to bring to Little Havana.

Commissioner Gort

Long before Wifredo (Willy) Gort started his career as a City of Miami Commissioner, he was already well known for his excellent community service and his volunteer work in what today are important not- for- profit agencies offering social services to the elderly, the young and the small business community, like Little Havana Nutrition and Activity Center, Youth Co-Op and the Latin Chamber of Commerce (CAMACOL).

Wilfredo (Willy) Gort was elected as City of Miami Commissioner in the City-wide election on November 9, 1993. In 1996 Mr. Gort was selected Vice Mayor, and served as acting mayor three months after the death of Mayor Stephen P. Clark.

Having worked on the 1994 – 1995 City Budget in collaboration with the city’s department directors and unions, Mr. Gort was able to reduce, city budget by over $20 million. Mr. Gort worked closely with the City Neighborhood Enhancement System (NET), believing that this the best system to better serve the community; indentifying each communities needs and addressing those needs to better each community and therefore strengthen the city community by community.
