Picnic Gives Children Chance to Celebrate
 Summer One Last Time

As summer comes to an early close and schools ready their classrooms for students to file back in, the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department is planning a summer picnic extravaganza for all of their summer campers at Hadley Park, 1300 NW 50 Street on Friday, July 29 from 10am till 2pm. 3000 Campers from the 26 summer camp sites will participate in a multitude of events that will fuel many day dreams until next summer rolls around.

Activities:

  • The First Annual Chess Tournament – campers who have participated in the new Checkmate in the Park program, held at 25 different parks during the summer, will compete to see who will be named ultimate chess champion of the 2005 Summer Camp.
  • Funky Talent Show
  • Watermelon Eating Contest – questions will be answered when the Parks Department discovers just how many slices of watermelon can one child eat.
  • Sidewalk Art Contest – After a summer full of arts and craft time, campers will have an opportunity to express their creative thoughts through the medium of chalk and concrete.
  • Fashion Show - Campers participated in a new program with Hands of Broward to design, show and model their own clothing line. Additionally this program worked with campers to build sailboats which will be on display at the park throughout the picnic.

The entire day will celebrate being young, full of energy and the freedom that summer brings. Summer may be soon over but the parks never stop having fun.

On August 4, 2005, 17 parks will participate in the annual Talent Show at the Manuel Artime Theatre, 900 NW 1 Street . This will conclude all of the summer related activities for 2005. Parks have practiced all summer with their campers to present a diverse representation of the talents that the children of the City of Miami posses.

The Parks and Recreation Department, cordially invite media outlets to attend both events. For more information contact Lara de Souza (305) 416-1341 or by e-mail ldesouza@ci.miami.fl.us.
