The City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department of Programs for Persons with Disabilities fosters and develops comprehensive municipal recreation and daily living skill programs for developmentally disabled adults, elderly, mentally ill and school children. Programs are available for participation for all persons with disabilities within the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County.
Since 1973 the City of Miami has made available non-residential support services and community based recreation and life skills to adults and children with developmental and physical disabilities. Among the programs available are A.D.T. ( Adult Day Training Program) and L.I.F.T. (Living Independently For Tomorrow) and the NRSS (Non-Residential Habilitation Program) to name a few. To the left you will find a more comprehensive list of the services available and how you can become involved.
The Disabilities Division holds fourteen special events each calendar year, most are open to everyone in the disabled community and the average attendance is over two hundred persons. These events provide our clients and other guests with social opportunities not otherwise available. Each event is special for the client and is themed to cover holiday celebrations, dance, campfires and cultural events.
During the year we also schedule various activities that include University of Miami sports games, bowling, sailing, theatre and opera events, visits to the mall and local restaurants. We do our best to maintain our client's interest level and expose them to new experiences.
An annual fundraising golf tournament is held at the International Links Miami Melreese Golf Course. It provides a fun way for community leaders and supporters of the program to gather and raise money for a worthy cause. Funds raised are used to purchase most needed equipment, such as a wheelchair accessible bus and handicap accessible swim chairs to allow those with disabilities to take advantage of the City of Miami's pool facilities.
