The Obama Administration kicks off the Making Home Affordable Program in Miami   
The Obama Administration, with the help and support of Mayor Diaz, kicks off a nationwide campaign to promote the Making Home Affordable Program, a plan to stabilize our housing market and help millions of Americans reduce their monthly mortgage payments to more affordable levels. The campaign starts in Miami and then travels to nine additional housing markets that have been hit hard by foreclosure.

City Launches First Park Rangers Program   
Mayor Diaz and City Commissioners today joined children from the City Parks summer programs to officially launch the Miami’s first-ever Park Rangers program. The program, not unlike those in the American cities of New York, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco, is another example of the City's commitment to investing in our shared green spaces. The 24 Park Rangers will work to promote a safer environment at and around our Parks.

The Miami City Commission today undertook three sustainable initiatives that further Mayor Diaz’s environmental program during Miami’s Green Week. Also today, the Mayor and Commission presented a check for $8,000 to local nonprofit Dream in Green, which will go towards City-nonprofit partnership: 'The Home Energy Saver Challenge’. Through this program, 50 homes in the City of Miami will partake in a 6 month program that will monitor homeowners' energy use and provide them with low cost ways to reduce energy consumption and related costs.

Mayor today sent a letter to the members of the South Florida Congressional Delegation calling for their support for The American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) (H.R. 2454), pending in the House of Representatives. Mayor Diaz also urged the delegation to help strengthen the bill with the inclusion of funding for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program which provides a vital nexus for emissions reduction at the local level.

Mayor Diaz visited the restored spoil islands off of Dinner Key today, which are now being utilized as an environmental Summer Camp by Shake-A-Leg. The City has invested over a million dollars in waterway and spoil island restoration, providing a sustainable natural habitat for the benefit of all Miami residents. The event, part of Miami Green Week, commemorates the work done with partners including Shake-A-Leg, DERM, Florida Inland Navigation District, Royal Caribbean Ocean Fund, Dade Community Foundation, Dinner Key Marina, Hands on Miami and Ransom Everglades School.

City of Miami Children, Olympic Athletes Join in Celebration of Olympic Day   
Mayor Diaz led a citywide celebration of Olympic Day with local Olympians, Tiffany Cohen, Gary Hall and Gary Hall, Jr. and more than 100 Miami children at Shenandoah Park today. The event also served to promote local support for the Chicago2016 bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The City of Miami Parks Department will continue the celebration throughout the summer with the Miami Summer Olympics program, which encourages physical activity and promote the Olympic values among the city’s youth.

Commission Approves final resolutions for construction of Museum Park   
The Miami Art Museum and Miami Science Museum’s new homes in Downtown's Museum Park may begin construction after the City Commission unanimously approved three resolutions today. The Commission approved the final lease agreement between the City and the museums, as well as the development and remediation agreement, which provides for the environmental site assessment and corresponding site rehabilitation of Bicentennial Park. The Museums are now able to receive funding from the Miami-Dade County Building Better Communities General Obligation Bonds to provide for the final design, development and construction of the project.

City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho recognized today more than 65 sixth-grade students at George Washington Carver Middle School that have completed the ELEVATE MIAMI Rites of Passage program during a ceremony at Carver Middle School. These students are among 300 throughout the City that earned a computer through the program. During the event, students got a sneak peek of the model of computer they will be receiving in the next few days, free of charge, for their accomplishments.

Mayor Manny Diaz and Miami Police Chief John Timoney joined Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in announcing $400,000 in funding for the Miami Police Department’s Photo Lab Upgrades Project. City officials today joined neighbors and community groups for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Dorothy Quintana Community Center at Roberto Clemente Park. The brand new Center building will feature a 1700 sq ft Social Hall, a divisible space to be used for community and family functions, an Exhibit Gallery and much more. As work begins, the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce and projec contractor will conduct a job fair in the neighborhood to fill the many new construction jobs.

In celebration of National Arbor Day, City of Miami’s GreenMiami Initiative held a tree planting in Little Haiti/Buena Vista East area with the assistance of Archbishop Curley High School. Miami Proposes to Lead the nation in energy efficiency with $200million Smart Grid Initiative
Mayor Diaz today announced a groundbreaking energy initiative that proposes to use federal economic stimulus funds to help spur a $200 million investment in “Smart Grid” technology and renewable energy over the next two years. The initiative, called “Energy Smart Miami,” would help Miami and Dade County consumers save money by giving them more choices over how they consume and conserve electrical power. It would also generate near-term demand for “green collar jobs” to support its implementation, while further solidifying Miami’s national leadership in championing the responsible environmental practices needed to address the longer-term challenge of addressing climate change, which poses a significant threat to Florida and its coastal regions.

Mayor Manny Diaz was honored by the American Architectural Foundation (AAF), in association with the American Institute of Architects, for receiving the foundation’s 2009 Keystone Award in a reception on April 16, 2009, at the Cuba Ocho Art and Research Center. The Keystone Award is presented annually by AAF to an organization or individual outside of the architectural profession for their leadership in demonstrating the power of architecture and design to improve lives and transform communities. By presenting Mayor Diaz with the Keystone Award, the American Architectural Foundation is recognizing and honoring his vision for the design of his city. Previous winners who could not be present sent the Mayor a congratulatory letter that was read at the event.

PORT OF MIAMI TUNNEL PROJECT MOVES FORWARD   
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has reaffirmed its commitment to the Port of Miami Tunnel project by agreeing to move forward with the existing procurement process and committing to an expedited re-procurement process should a contract not be finalized by June 1. The agreement is the result of three days of negotiations between city, county and state officials.

'Be Water Wise Miami!' Campaign Launches with students at Miami schools   
Students at Jose de Diego Middle School today led Mayor Diaz and Superintendent Carvalho through a water measurement exercise as part of the “Be Water Wise Miami,” a project of the National Environmental Education Foundation that is bringing math, science and language activities focused on water conservation to 14 schools throughout the city. This public-private education project can serve as an example to other U.S. cities facing water conservation challenges.

Mayor Diaz is urging residents to use the City's free tax preparation services before the April 15 deadline and learn if they qualify to receive increased benefits this year from the federal government thanks to the Economic Stimulus Bill. Part of the City's Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Campaign, the free tax prep sites also provide information about Benefit Bank, special one-time payments, tax credits and increases in EITC return.

Miami individuals and families receiving food stamps will receive additional monthly benefits beginning today, April 1, 2009, as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Residents can apply for their benefits at the 13 Neighborhood Enhancement Team (NET) Office Benefit Banks, where they can apply for SNAP, child care, TANF, Earned Income Tax Credit, Medicaid, School Nutrition programs, Income Tax Preparation, and other services through a single application.

In a ceremony hosted by Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and local CBS Station WFOR-TV, CBS4 it was announced that Miami Northwestern High School is the winner of the Green Schools Initiative and will be awarded the grand prize “green makeover” that will be overseen by a green schools professional and approved by the Miami-Dade County Public School District. Potential projects could include energy efficient lighting, solar and wind projects, a green roof and internal and external green upgrades.  The Miami-Dade County Public School District will receive the grand prize green makeover for Miami Northwestern and a sustainable environmental program valued at approximately $250,000 in products and services.

Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum Celebrates Grand Opening   
Mayor Manny Diaz and fellow City Officials celebrated the opening of the newly renovated Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum, located at 1009 NW 5th Avenue in Overtown. The museum is located in the only known structure in the nation that was designed, devoted to and operated as a separate station house and municipal court for Blacks. City of Miami and Orange Bowl Committee Join to Build Brand New Youth Football Field at Moore Park   
The City of Miami Commission today unanimously voted to accept a grant from the Orange Bowl Committee for $2.5 million for the construction of a youth sports/football stadium at Moore Park that will commemorate the “Palm Festival” game played in 1933 at Moore Park between the University of Miami Hurricanes and Manhattan College. This game laid the foundation for the college football tradition known as the Orange Bowl and the Orange Bowl Committee. The grant also celebrates the 75th year of the Orange Bowl Game.

City Commission Approves Measures to Improve the Quality of Life in Miami’s Neighborhoods   
(Miami, FL.)—The City of Miami Commission today approved items that will help improve the quality of life for Miami’s residents. In order to allow several public service agencies to continue providing hot meals to low-income elderly in the City this Fiscal Year (08-09), the Commission allocated critical funding from the Mayor’s Poverty Initiative Account (PH.5). The award of just under $300,000 will ensure that these agencies are funded at the same level this Fiscal Year (08-09) as in past years, despite federal funding cuts.

The City of Miami has secured $1 million in Flood Hazard Mitigation Funding from the federal government. Miami, FL – The City of Miami was notified that it will receive $12.06 million in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to combat the widespread effects of foreclosures as part of the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development’s (HUD) new Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) under the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. Once the federal government issues specific guidelines for use of these funds, the City’s Department of Community Development will go before City Commission with recommendations for their implementation and administration, to effectively assist low- and moderate-income residents and reduce blight within City limits.

Critical Mass Miami Celebrates Second Anniversary   
Today is the 2nd anniversary of Critical Mass in the City of Miami. Critical Mass is a monthly bike ride planned and organized through Emerge Miami, a local activist organization that engages a broad spectrum of issues including environmental sustainability, education, and alternative transportation. There was much to celebrate when the bike ride stopped for a lunch break at Peacock Park. Members of the Bike Action Committee and Mayor Diaz were on hand to discuss bike routes throughout Miami where cyclists use them most. It was an informal event, but also an important one, with nearly 50 riders participating. Results from these conversations and from a brief online bicycling survey put together by Critical Mass/Emerge Miami will be used in the City of Miami Bike Action Plan. The Plan, which Mayor Diaz will bring to the City Commission this Fall, details the ways that we are working together to make Miami a bike-friendly city for everyone.

During his time as a student at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, Mayor Diaz was a three sport letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. In 1973, he was Athlete of the Year, all conference in both basketball and baseball, and scored the first touchdown in the football game against Westminister.

CITY OF MIAMI TEARS DOWN NEIGHBORHOOD MENACE   
(Miami, Fla.) – The City of Miami has undertaken a concerted effort to demolish abandoned structures that have been havens for criminals and eye sores for surrounding neighborhoods. On Wednesday, September 19th, 2007, at 2:00 pm, the city will be demolishing two abandoned buildings that are part of an industrial facility located at 650 NW 8 St (33,500 sq. ft.) and 601 NW 7 St. (41,700 sq. ft.). Mayor Manny Diaz, City Manager Pete Hernandez, and officials from Building, Code Enforcement, and Police will be present. Just in the last year, more than 100 arrests have been made on this property for crimes such as narcotics violations, trespassing, and stolen property. This structure has been deemed unsafe due to the fact that is has been vacant, unsecured, and open.

MIAMI – Mayor Manny Diaz is joining mayors from throughout the nation in a letter to the Federal Reserve Board asking them to exercise their authority under the Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act (HOEPA) to implement strong protections against abusive lending practices on sub-prime mortgages. Estimates predict that close to 2 million families may fall victim to financial distress including foreclosures as interest rates climb on their adjustable rate mortgages (ARM).
