This year’s film festival, in its 24th year, screened over 250 films, which attracted more than 70,000 attendees.  The City is proud that our Olympia Theater is home to this international film festival.  Miami’s geographical and cultural place in the world makes it a perfect location for introducing world-renowned cinema. For 10 days, the City of Miami played host to almost 300 local, national and international media and over 350 filmmakers, producers and industry representatives from around the world.  During the last four years, the Festival has presented films from more than 50 countries, including 250 East Coast, US, and world premieres, many Oscar winners and nominees, and countless international prizewinners.

In addition to showcasing films from all over the world, panel and roundtable discussions, as well as seminars examine the craft of filmmaking, as well as the business of creating, financing, and distributing a film.

One of the world’s most prestigious literary events takes place in our own backyard, in Downtown Miami.  From its humble beginning 23 years ago, known then as Books by the Bay, the festival has grown to attract thousands of book lovers and hundreds of writers from all over the world including Argentina, South Africa, France, Cuba, Guatemala, England, Mexico, Hong Kong, Spain, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Bosnia, Trinidad, Russia, Taiwan, Haiti, Finland, Canada, and the Philippines, just to name a few. Previous year’s authors have included recipients of the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, Casa de las Americas Prize, Pushcart Prize, O’Henry Award, National Magazine Award, Commonwealth Prize, MacArthur Fellowship, and Edgar Award.

We are proud to say that we have been loyal supporters of the Book Fair and have partnered with them on exciting advancements such as the International Pavilion; in its initial year we sponsored through our Sister-Cities program, the City of Kagoshima which played a pivotal role in the Japanese Pavilion.

Art Basel is a unique art show combining international art with an exciting program of exhibitions, parties and crossover events including music, film, architecture and design.

Much like the Super Bowl, Art Basel is an event that has regional impact and we are proud to say that a large portion of the arts events, occurring during Basel week, take place in the City of Miami.  This year, five major art fairs joined our three major collections and over a hundred art spaces/galleries to attract tens of thousands of visitors to the Wynwood and Design Districts.  The City partnered with local stakeholders in maximizing opportunities for growth during Art Basel 06; among the highlights was the launch of a fun and creative way to get around the arts districts: by the use of pedicabs.

From street festivals to signature events, Miami is home to many diverse outdoor activities. From one of the world’s largest art shows, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, to unique neighborhood festivals such as Viernes Culturales, Flagami Fiesta, and the Goombay Festival, Miami offers a wide range of events and includes something for everyone.  Sandwiched in between are events such as the ING Marathon, Taste of the Grove, Carnival Miami, and the renowned Calle Ocho Festival.  Over a hundred events give Miami a reason to celebrate all year round.
