-Miami hailed as 'Most Exciting City' in Wallpaper*'s Inaugural 2004 Design Awards-
January 5, 2005 - (Miami, FL) - Wallpaper* magazine has designated Miami as the Best City of 2004. The honor was part of the magazine’s January 2005 issue featuring the Inaugural Wallpaper* Design Awards. Miami was awarded the honor over other cities such as Buenos Aires, London and Shanghai.
Wallpaper* hailed Miami for its diversity, flourishing economy and its emergence as a capital for design, art and culture, “… in Miami, you can palpably feel that this is a place preparing to take on its mantle of metropolitan manhood at the frisky age of just 108 years old. No wonder, then, that our judges voted it the best city of 2004.”
“We are delighted to be named the best city in the world by Wallpaper*. This is a very notable designation, as Wallpaper* is the leading lifestyle magazine for international design,” said Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. “Wallpaper* acknowledges that in addition to being a premier travel destinations, we are on the cusp of becoming the world’s next great city.” Robert Johnston, Wallpaper*'s U.S. editor and the author of the piece, told the Miami Herald that: “For many years Miami was really -- certainly from a European perspective -- a beach resort. Miami is growing up, and is now becoming a world city.'' The article mentions Miami as the “de facto capital of Latin America” and suggests that the city is the “New York of the 21st century.” It recognizes the City’s surging economy, describing the current boom of nearly $20 billion worth of development projects as ‘lusty’.
Wallpaper* also lauds the City’s Design District for its leadership in promoting the development of design and art, describing the Design District as the “temple” of Wallpaper* magazine lifestyle. The article also discusses the impact of Art Basel and celebrated the city’s commitment to the development of the arts, making Miami “one of the hottest cultural destinations in the country”.
Based in the United Kingdom and owned by Time Warner, Wallpaper* is the leading world publication highlighting design and lifestyle.
