Passing of the Gavel
The City of Miami celebrated its annual passing of the gavel ceremony. Former Commission Vice-Chairman Angel Gonzalez follows Commissioner Joe Sanchez as Chairman, with Commissioner Johnny Winton assuming the position of Vice-Chair. The passing of the gavel has been a yearly tradition enacted since Mayor Diaz took office.

Mayor announces hurricane relief effort - Miami Recovers
On Monday, November 7th, Mayor Manny Diaz along with Chairman Joe Sanchez announced a Hurricane Relief Effort named “Miami Recovers”. Miami Recovers switches the focus of the city’s relief from the distribution of essential supplies to the establishment of a multi-agency taskforce and the distribution of information regarding available assistance from local, state, federal and other sources.

Mayor Manny Diaz breaks ground for new soccer fields and recreation center in little haiti neighborhood
Mayor Manny Diaz joined Commissioner Jeffrey Allen, City of Miami staff and residents on Tuesday, October 11th to formally break ground on the Little Haiti Park Project. Construction has commenced on the first of two phases of Little Haiti Park with the promise of bringing a first class recreational, social and sports complex to one of Miami’s most unique neighborhoods.

Mayor Diaz and Chairman Joe Sanchez unveil street improvements on Cuban Memorial Boulevard, SW 13th Avenue
On October 8th, Mayor Manny Diaz and Commission Chairman Joe Sanchez held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Cuban Memorial Boulevard, now newly redesigned with a beautiful pedestrian walkway. The renovation of the boulevard, joining Coral Way and S.W 8th Street, is one of many Capital Improvements Projects undertaken recently in the City of Miami. The City of Miami, Camilus House and the University of Miami announce future site of Camilus House
On Wednesday, September 15, 2005, the City of Miami, the University of Miami and Camillus House joined together to make an important announcement. Mayor Manny Diaz, Commissioner Angel Gonzalez, University President Donna E. Shalala and Camillus President Dr. Paul Ahr announced details of a plan that secures a long-awaited home for Camillus House and allows for the construction of a major bioscience center for the University’s Miller School of Medicine. The plan builds hope for Miami’s homeless and brings job to Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood.

Mayor and Commissioners announce bold Affordable housing effort
On Monday September 12th, Mayor Manny Diaz, Commission Chairman Joe Sanchez, and Commission Vice-Chairman Angel Gonzalez announced the beginning of a coordinated effort to change the methodology used by Miami-Dade County’s property appraiser in its valuation of multi-family rental housing for low or moderate income persons. Mayor Diaz explained that that “unfair appraisals of multi-family rental housing units for low and moderate income persons are driving up property taxes. In turn, this burden is being passed to tenants.” The announcement follows a resolution, proposed by the Mayor and adopted unanimously during a meeting last week of the City Commission, which calls on the property appraiser to base valuation of affordable rental property for low or moderate income persons on the income derived from the property.

Mayor Diaz and Dr. Rudy Crew announce education plan for City of Miami schools
Mayor Diaz has tackled the issue of education and youth services at the City level for the past three years with a strategic emphasis on improving student achievement, family involvement, and the students’ learning environment underscoring the City’s commitment to the education of its youth. This month the City of Miami and Miami Dade County Public School System made history by formally committing to working together to improve education in the City of Miami. The Education Compact is organized into three major areas: improving academic programs, meeting capital/infrastructure needs and community involvement.

Mayor hosts lunch during the xi round negotiations of the andean free trade agreement in miami
Mayor Manny Diaz joined delegates from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and observers from Bolivia, in a luncheon sponsored by the Mayor’s International Council. The delegations were in Miami along with US Trade Representatives as part of the XI US-Andean Free Trade Agreement Negotiations. The Mayor delivered a speech, highlighting Miami’s growing importance in hemispherical trade, and its de facto role as the ‘Gateway to the Americas.’

MAYOR DIAZ HIGHLIGHTS MIAMI 21 AT MAYORS' INSTITUTE ON CITY DESIGN
Mayor Diaz was a featured speaker during a meeting in Chicago, Illinois on June 13th of the Mayors' Institute on City Design. The Mayor took the opportunity to discuss Miami 21, the new comprehensive master plan for the City of Miami. Launched earlier this year, Miami 21 is based on new urbanism and smart growth principles which will consider the aspects of economic development, parks and public places, transportation, historic preservation, and arts and culture in its total development and implementation.

The New Destiny
Mayor Manny Diaz delivered his fourth State of the City Address on May 24th, 2005. The Mayor’s speech, entitled “The New Destiny”, discussed the significant progress of his administration and outlined his vision for the future of Miami. The Mayor highlighted a restored sense of political stability and public service to government since he was elected, ushering in an area of economic prosperity and citywide opportunity. Poverty, housing, employment, education and law enforcement were among the topics that Mayor Diaz discussed in specific.

4th Annual Older Americans Month Celebration for Seniors
Mayor Manny Diaz joined 2,500 seniors in the Coconut Grove Convention Center on Tuesday May 17th as they celebrated Older Americans Month. Seniors from from Miami-Dade County enjoyed an afternoon of free lunch, live entertainment, a fashion show and many great prize giveaways. Van Toffler, President, MTV Networks Group, HAS announced that the “2005 MTV Video Music Awards” will return to Miami, Florida for the second year in a row. The 22nd annual awards show will air live from AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami on Sunday, August 28th at 8:00pm ET/PT. 2004 MTV Video Music Awards was the most watched telecast on cable for 2004 among P12-34. Florida’s U.S. Senators Join City of Miami Officials To Fight Potential CDBG Budget Cuts
In a meeting held at Miami City Hall, Senator Bill Nelson joined Mayor Manny Diaz, Commission Chairman Joe Sanchez, Vice-Chairman Angel Gonzalez and Commissioner Johnny Winton to discuss a plan of action in wake of the proposed elimination of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in the President’s Fiscal Year 2006 Budget. This meeting was the first for the CDBG Task Force formed by Mayor Diaz on February 10th, which will focus on community involvement at the local and national level and outreach initiatives geared to educate the public on the importance of CDBG funded services.

Mayor's Swearing In Ceremony

Mayor Manny Diaz has been named the Business Leader of the Year for 2004 by South Florida CEO Magazine.
Hailed for his efforts to pursue economic development and business growth in the City of Miami, Mayor Diaz is the first elected official to ever receive the award.
