LOCAL VOLUNTEERS AND STUDENTS TEAM UP TO PLANT 100 LARGE TREES IN THE CITY OF MIAMI
More than 40 volunteers from The National Arbor Day Foundation, The Home Depot Foundation and the City of Miami along with 20 students from Citrus Grove Elementary and 25 students from Miami High School’s Youth Council will plant 100 large trees and give away hundreds of seedlings in metro Miami to recognize Florida’s state Arbor Day. The Arbor Day Celebration is aimed at increasing awareness of the vital role tree play as green infrastructure in our cities and in creating a healthy, livable community.
Local Team Depot and community volunteers will work with expert arborists to plant large (4-8 ft.) native trees on the city blocks that surround Miami High School. Adult volunteers and school children will learn how to properly plant, mulch and water the trees in order to facilitate long-term health. Local supporters of the event include the National Football League, South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee, Florida Power & Light, and Citizens for a Better South Florida.
Mayor Manny Diaz and the City of Miami will also be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation for reaching Tree City USA® certified status.
Strategically placed trees within an urban community can have a positive economic, social and environmental impact. Trees make dollars and sense: - Just three trees strategically placed around a home can decrease utility bills by 50% - Residential property values can increase 5 – 20% if trees are in the landscape - Sales at businesses on tree-lined streets are up to 12% higher - Crime rates decrease in areas with more greenery - Children who have a view of greenery perform better in school - Access to green spaces relieves the symptoms of ADD, resulting in better concentration - Access to green areas helps reduce stress and aggression in urban environments - Each year, an acre of trees absorbs the amount of carbon produced by driving a car 26,000 miles - Trees reduce the amount of water runoff from rain and clean the water that does run off, saving billions of dollars otherwise needed for storm water control and water treatment facilities
