Mayor Manny Diaz, the Jefferson Reeves Clinic and Volunteers Team up For National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Activities

Mayor Manny Diaz and the City of Miami’s Overtown NET Office will team up with the Jefferson Reeves Clinic, volunteers and local college students to recognize National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and distribute information about the epidemic and testing locations on Monday, February 7, 2005 throughout Overtown. A press conference to discuss the day’s activities and the HIV/AIDS epidemic is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the Jefferson Reeves Health Clinic (1009 NW 5th Ave).
Overtown is one of the neighborhoods with the highest rates of HIV and AIDS in the United States. The neighborhood outreach teams will begin canvassing efforts at Jefferson Reeves Health Clinic in Overtown at 11:00 am. In addition, there will be free on-site rapid HIV testing provided by The Village South Inc. and counseling at Jefferson Reeves Clinic beginning at 11:30am. All residents are encouraged to come out and get tested. The incidence of HIV and AIDS in Miami is staggering, the most recent Miami-Dade Health Department HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report (December 2004) shows that there are 27,976 cumulative cases of AIDS in Miami-Dade County. The racial and ethnic breakdown captured by the Surveillance Report shows that 51% of the cumulative AIDS cases and 52% of the reported HIV cases are Black or African-American. The greatest concentration of this disease is in the City of Miami and its immediate surrounding areas.
