The City of Miami to Provide Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers

-Center is open every Thursday through the end of September-

(Miami, FL)-   The City of Miami ACCESS Miami along with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is providing Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) to nonresident alien individuals who need to file their taxes.  The new service is available only for the month of September every Thursday from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Manuel Artime Community Center located at 970 SW 1 Street, 4th floor.  The service is provided to all individuals residing in the City of Miami at no charge.

An ITIN is a nine-digit number issued by the IRS to individuals who are required to have a taxpayer identification number but who do not have or are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number.

“Our center will be providing this valuable and free service on a test-basis to determine the need in the community and help our residents get their documents and tax returns in order,” said Mayor Manny Diaz.

Individuals interested in applying for an ITIN should complete and attach a W-7 form to file taxes in addition to the original completed tax return(s) for which the ITIN is needed, bring original documents, or certified or notarized copies of documents, that substantiate the information provided on the W-7 form such as a civil birth certificate, an original valid passport, U.S. driver’s license or foreign driver’s license, U.S. state identification card.  Once the application and proper documentation has been submitted, please allow four to six weeks for the IRS to notify you in writing of your ITIN.

ITINs are provided to nonresident aliens only for the purposes of filing taxes.  Receipt of the ITIN does not change the immigration status, nor gives the individual the right to work in the United States, nor makes the individual eligible for earned income tax credit.

The ITIN service is provided through a partnership between City of Miami’s ACCESS Miami program and the Internal Revenue Service.

For more information about the ITIN program, visit www.irs.gov or call 311.
