City of Miami to Receive Federal Funding for Capital Improvements In House Approved FY2010 Appropriations Bill

-Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen Announces Funding-

(Miami, FL) The City of Miami’s storm water project has received federal funds in the Department of Homeland Security’s Appropriations legislation passed by the House of Representatives, as announced by Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, senior member of the Florida Congressional Delegation. The Congresswoman announced that $600,000 had been approved for the City of Miami’s storm water project in the House passed version of the Fiscal Year 2010 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill.

“I thank Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for her continued support of the City of Miami and for her commitment to securing these important funds for our Capital Improvements project to improve the quality of life of our residents,” said Mayor Diaz.

This is the second straight year that the efforts of Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen, and the city’s Federal delegation, have helped to insure that the House of Representatives allocates funding to the City’s stormwater project. The bill must be conferenced with the Senate version of the legislation; however the project’s inclusion in the House bill is a major step in securing funds for the storm water project, which seeks to implement storm water drainage projects throughout the City of Miami to improve flood conditions and reduce flood damage.

“I am pleased that we were able to secure these funds for this important South Florida Project and I look forward to working with all parties involved to continue the great cooperation that has gotten us to this point,” said Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen.

The City of Miami’s Office of Capital Improvements requested funding for the Auburn Storm Sewers Project. At the present time, this area is served by scattered localized drainage structures that are old and inadequate to properly drain the area. This project will mitigate flooding caused by storm events and improve water quality.

This project involves construction of a local drainage system for the area bounded by N.W. 7th Street, N.W. 27th Avenue, W. Flagler Street, and N.W. 37th Avenue The City’s storm sewer improvements consists of and not limited to a combination of exfiltration and swale trenches, connection to an existing or new positive outfall, rock trenches and pollution control structures. Miscellaneous road improvements may include but not limited to roadway milling and resurfacing, road reconstruction, sidewalk replacements, curb and gutter replacements, ADA ramps, re-grade and re-sodding swale areas, tree planting, repair and/or replace damaged or disfigured traffic signs.
