City of Miami Creates Education Advisory Board
-Board Will Oversee Education Compact-
|
(Miami, FL) - The Miami City Commission today unanimously approved the establishment of an Education Advisory Board, which will oversee all matters related to the City of Miami Education Compact, improve and enhance communication between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the City of Miami, recommend projects for improving and enhancing school facilities and advise the City Commission regarding matters relating to education and health, safety, transportation and quality of life issues that affect students.
“I thank our City Commission for creating the Education Advisory Board, which will ensure the sustainability of our education initiatives,” said Mayor Diaz. “Through this board, we can involve our community in initiatives that impact our children’s lives every day.”
Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho attended the City Commission meeting to support the creation of the board.
“Mayor Diaz’s leadership in the development of an Education Advisory Board underscores his commitment to the future of the City of Miami,” said Superintendent Carvalho. “I applaud the City of Miami Commission for making education a priority and look forward to continued collaboration on behalf of our students.”
In September 2005 the City of Miami forged an Education Compact with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to ensure that the academic lives of the children living in the City of Miami are as full and rich academically as they can be. The goal of this partnership is to ensure that every student that graduates from a City of Miami school is fully prepared to enter college or a career. The Education Compact is organized in three major areas: improving academic programs, meeting capital/infrastructure needs, and community involvement. Through the Compact, the Mayor’s Office and M-DCPS collaborate on many initiatives and legislative items in support of public education.
