(Miami Florida)—City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and Commission Chairman Joe Sanchez will welcome area neighbors for the grand opening of the new state-of-the-art gymnasium at Jose Marti Park, Saturday, October 18, 2008, at 10:30am at the intersection of SW 3rd Avenue and SW 5th Street (at Jose Marti Park). 

As part of the day’s festivities, Mayor Diaz and Commissioner Sanchez will honor 2008 Olympic Athletes from South Florida by presenting them with City of Miami medals. The following athletes have confirmed their attendance: Bershawn Jackson (Track & Field), Rafeeq Curry (Track & Field), Nancy Rios (Sailing), Tiffany Ross-Williams (Track & Field), Lauryn Williams (Track & Field) and Adler Volmar (Judo). 

The event is open to the public and Miami residents are encouraged to stop in, tour the brand new facility, and meet the Olympians.  

The new gymnasium is innovative in its architectural expression with a design by the recognized firm of Zyscovich, Inc., reflective of the new image of contemporary Miami. The gymnasium includes an indoor basketball court, a fitness center, an aerobics facility, locker rooms, administrative offices, storage space and a seating area for 500 people, which will provide an additional community meeting place for Miami residents.
