City of Miami Recruits Nearly 800
Police Officer Candidates in Record Time

MIAMI, FL - The City of Miami has received 754 police officer applications in only 3 weeks. This accomplishment is due to the collaborative work of the City’s Employee Relations Department and the Miami Police Department to carry out a comprehensive outreach campaign involving a number of effective methods to educate Miami’s residents.

“Increasing the police force to help safeguard our community is a priority for this administration,” said City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. “Once these candidates have met all requirements, they will be extra eyes and ears on streets throughout our neighborhoods.”

Efforts to inform prospective candidates included a variety of efforts such as: an Open House event that yielded over 125 completed applications, billboards, placards on bus stops within the City of Miami, radio announcements, notices to community groups, e-videos, newspaper ads, local and out of town Job Fairs, internet postings, visits to local colleges, and television commercials – including spots on the City’s very own Channel 77.

“Our recruitment efforts typically take more than a month and yield 600 applications, so this is a great accomplishment not only for our community, but also for the city staff who made it possible,” said City Manager Pete Hernandez. “I am encouraged that so many people have shown interest in becoming members of the City of Miami Police team.”

“Joni Harris and her team as well as Chief Burden and his staff have done an outstanding job in making this record recruitment drive possible” said Miami Police Chief John F. Timoney, “it says a lot about the good reputation of our department and the caliber of the men and women we are attracting.”

The next step for applicants will be to take the Civil Service Exam, followed by a Physical Ability Tests for those who are successful.
