(Miami, Florida)--City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz will recognize Andy Mandell-Mr. Diabetes®, Executive Director of the Defeat Diabetes Foundation, at the City Commission meeting on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 9 a.m., at Miami City Hall Chamber, 3500 Pan American Drive.

Mayor Diaz will commemorate Mandell’s epic journey, and acknowledge his efforts to inform the public about the disease and the steps that need to be taken to prevent, manage and control diabetes. 

Mandell, a Florida resident, is undertaking an epic walk around the perimeter of United States, more than 10,000 miles, to raise awareness about the dangers of diabetes. So far, he has completed over 9,600 miles of his journey.

Mandell, a diabetic of over 20 years decided to fight back, after being bedridden for two years and nearly succumbing to the disease.  He developed his own recovery program, incorporating proper diet, exercise and medical monitoring.
