MIAMI, FL – Mayors of principal cities from Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States today reached consensus on a statement of principles at the third Mayors’ Hemispheric Forum hosted by Miami Mayor Manny Diaz in Miami. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the conclusion of an unparalleled gathering of municipal government leaders, held in conjunction with the United States Conference of Mayors’ (USCM) annual meeting.

Based on the principle that cities and metropolitan areas of the hemisphere drive the economic and social growth of the Americas, the agreement was reached after convening for three consecutive years. The four areas of their commitment include Strengthening Municipal Administrations; Promoting Democratic Practices; Public Safety and Security; Economic Growth and Development; and Environmental Conservation and Sustainability.

“The basis of democracy begins with cities,” said Mayor Diaz.

During the Forum, a diverse and notable group of mayors shared successful models to reduce poverty and exchanged innovative ideas on energy reform, infrastructure, and digital literacy in a Microsoft sponsored session. A key part of the discussion centered on how investment in sustainable development will elevate their global competitiveness.

“This type of exchange allows us to expound on successful public policies that can be implemented in other cities to improve the living conditions of all residents,” said Mayor Samuel Moreno of Bogota, Colombia.

Mayor Diaz will assume the Presidency of the USCM at the organization’s annual meeting.
