City of Miami Lends a Helping Hand to Victims in Peru

- This Weekend is the Last Chance to Drop off Items at Miami Fire Stations-

(Miami, Fla.) – This weekend is the last chance for Miami residents to drop off non-perishable items at their local City of Miami Fire Station. In an effort to assist the victims of the earthquake in Peru, City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, the City of Miami Commission, and City Manager Pete Hernandez have offered city services to help collect much-needed items.

“At this time of great tragedy, I would like to offer humanitarian aid to our Peruvian neighbors, victims of the recent earthquake in Peru,” said Mayor Diaz in a letter to Jorge Roman Morey, the Consul General of Peru in Miami. “The City of Miami shares the Peruvian community’s grief, and will start a relief effort that will incorporate sites throughout the city.”

City of Miami Fire-Rescue stations have been collecting non-perishable items to send to Peru since Wednesday, August 22nd. The last day to drop off items is this Sunday, August 26th, from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. In order to provide the victims with the most useful assistance, the city is asking that residents drop off only the following items: water, non-perishable food items, baby formula (powder), first aid kits, and honey (bee honey).

The City of Miami is NOT collecting monetary donations. Residents who wish to donate funds should do so through the American Red Cross. To donate, please call 1-800-RedCross (1-800-733-2767), or for Spanish call 1-800-257-7575.
