“Working Smarter to Improve
the Quality of Life for Every Customer”

It is our mission
to provide more than 68,000 single and multi (up
to four units) residential homes of Miami with
the most innovative, responsive, environmentally
safe, cost effective and efficient solid waste
management program. We have already begun
this process with a 21st century philosophy in
leadership. We have flattened the levels of
management within the organization to ensure
input is achieved at every level and to ensure
everyone plays a vital role in the department’s
success.
Our short-term objectives are to concentrate
on developing a comprehensive Safety and Loss
Control program and fully optimize all core
services within the operations division.
In the winter of 2002 the department introduced
to the City of Miami residents fully-automated
refuse collection services. This
technologically advanced waste collection system
is designed to improve collection efficiency,
enhance performance, improve customer relations
and reduce both operational and workers’
compensation cost. The Department of Solid
Waste is composed of two divisions:
Administration & Operations. The
administration division handles all
administrative matters, code enforcement,
support services and customer services.
The operations division is responsible for
garbage collection, trash collection. recycling,
street sweeping and composting. Garbage
collection is performed twice a week, trash
collection and recycling is performed once a
week to all 68,000 households. The amount of
waste generated is approximately 184,000 tons
per year. The disposal cost for this
tonnage exceeds $11.1 annually. In
addition, the City of Miami sweeps approximately
250 miles per week of major thoroughfares and
public rights of way. Additionally,
approximately 500 litter containers are serviced
citywide. Finally, the city has a clean
yard trash composting facility wherein this
debris is collected and processed to make
compost and mulch which is offered, free of
charge, to City of Miami residents
As we move forward with our new approach it is
important to recognize the value that employees
and citizens play as a key component to our
success. Many decisions will be made over
time to improve our efficient and effective
service delivery. It is important to place
values like honesty, integrity and a sense of
pride in making these important decisions.
We welcome your input and most importantly, we
look forward to the commitment of all
stakeholders to make the City of Miami the
cleanest largest city in the nation.
Once again, I am extremely delighted and
thankful to be a part of this new endeavor.
I hope that you will find our web site
informative and user friendly.
Sincerely,
Mario Soldevilla,
Solid Waste Director
