The Claims Unit works with the City Attorneys Office in a best-practices approach to review litigated claims, to mitigate loss trends, reduce frequency, and avoid losses that could severely impact the City’s financial position. This level of communication has proved to be integral in ensuring that the claims administrator for the excess carrier understands the case in its entirety and that the City’s interests are protected. The City maintains excess coverage with independent insurance carriers for the workers’ compensation, auto liability, public official’s liability, and general liability self-insurance programs. Claims development, reserves, and expenditures are reported to the excess carrier when it is probable that a loss has occurred and the amount of that loss can be reasonably estimated to reach the limits set by the excess policy.
All City supervisors are required to report all claims by phone to The Network, the injury call center for the City. The reporting is done via a toll-free number, which is available 24 hours a day. Once the claim has been reported to the call center, The Network sends a completed Notice of Injury (DWC-1) to the Third-Party
claims Administrator (Gallagher Bassett Services), the managed care company
(AmeriSys), and the City’s Risk Management Department. This type of system, which offers quick and accessible reporting, facilitates immediate medical assistance and expedited handling in order to process and close the active claim in the most efficient manner for the benefit of the employees.
