The Americans with Disabilities Act, which became federal law in 1990, is a civil rights legislation designed to extend protection to persons with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides certain rights for individuals with disabilities and is enforced by the US Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division. The act affects the areas of employment, public services and transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunications. The Unit monitors the City’s compliance with Title II of the ADA (municipal programs and services) and works closely with all city departments in an effort to provide guidance and support for legal settlements regarding ADA matters. The Risk Management Department is responsible for ensuring that all City programs, services, and activities provided by the City of Miami are accessible to people with disabilities.
