The goal of the Department of Parks and Recreation is to serve all of the residents of
the City of Miami by providing safe, clean, and wholesome recreational, educational and
cultural activities in order to promote a sense of community.
- The Parks and Recreation Department will focus on increasing Medicaid
waivers by 20%.
- Work with the City's Employee Relations
Department to develop a "Sensitivity Training Program" that will
provide assistance to Parks and Recreation employees currently
participating in the Project SEARCH program.
- Expand the Learn-to-Swim Program to include additional
programs for people with different swimming abilities
at 4 City of Miami pools: Jose Marti, Shenandoah, Hadley and West End Parks.
- Start an After-School Program for 15 children with disabilities in grades 1 -5 and
implement a Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program for eligible 4-year-olds.
- Refurbish the parking lot at African Square and Clemente
Parks; provide site furnishings at Dorsey, Reeves,
Lummus, Sewell, and 12 Avenue Mini-Parks;
- renovate the restroom building at Lummus Park;
- upgrade the softball field at Moore Park; provide additional irrigation at Range
Park;
- Install a new playground at Reeves Park;
- Install a volleyball court and miniature soccer field at Sewell Park;
- Construct a picnic shelter at the Rainbow Village;
- Provide additional playground equipment at Unity Park.
- Expand the partnership with Special Olympics of Miami-Dade
County to provide a Summer Camp for students with special needs for 4 weeks during the summer.
- Start Project SEARCH programs in Miami-Dade County Public Schools
and Area 6 Florida Vocational Rehabilitation Schools as part of a new
city-wide initiative. Project SEARCH is a school-to-work transition
program for high school students with developmental disabilities to
learn marketable job skills within the City of Miami Administration Building.
