Office of the City Attorney Summer Law Clerk Program
The
City of Miami Office of the City Attorney has established a
summer law clerk program for law students with an express
interest in public service. The Office of the City Attorney
provides legal advice and serves as counsel to the City’s
elected public officials as well as all appointed officials, all
boards and departments. The legal work provided by attorneys in
the Office of the City Attorney includes civil rights and tort
litigation, commercial and real estate transactions, land use
and regulation, public records, ethics and election law,
legislation, labor and employment, workers’ compensation, and
code enforcement.
The
summer program participation period is June 5, 2006, through
August 11, 2006. Preference will be given to law students
entering their third year of law school in the fall of 2006.
Students are paid $16.50 an hour. Each clerk is expected to
remain in the program for the full length of the program
commitment (10 weeks). Vacations or non-emergency absences will
not be allowed during the 10-week period. The clerkship is
designed to provide each student with a positive and realistic
experience in the practice of municipal law. The assignments are
screened to assure that clerks gain practical exposure to civil
litigation as well as various areas of practice unique to
municipal law offices. At the commencement of the clerkship,
there will be an orientation session wherein the law clerks will
receive general instructions concerning office policy and
procedures and a presentation from each of the practice areas.
The summer clerks will be afforded an opportunity to accompany
the City Attorney to at least one meeting of the City Commission
and accompany Assistant City Attorneys to federal and state
courts, advisory board meetings, and quasi-judicial board
hearings in conjunction with their assignments.
Law
students wishing to serve as paid or volunteer law clerks during
the Summer of 2006 (June through August) should submit their
application by March 6, 2006. The Office of the City Attorney is
an equal opportunity employer that values diversity as an asset
to the organization.
