WHEN AND HOW CAN I APPLY FOR THE POSITION OF FIREFIGHTER?

The City generally recruits for Firefighter for a brief period every two years and applications are only accepted during this recruiting period. JOB DUTIES:

Provide rapid response to fire alarms, emergency medical alarms, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency situations. May be required to accurately gather and evaluate patient assessment information, formulate a working diagnosis and/or treatment plan, prioritize and implement necessary treatment per medical protocol and/or physician direction via radio. Perform general maintenance work towards the upkeep of the Department’s property, apparatus and other equipment. Firefighters may work 24-hour shifts on a rotating basis, including nights, weekends and holidays. Work schedules are assigned by the Fire Chief based on department need and may include work hours that vary from time to time.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

RESIDENCY: Must reside within the corporate limits of Miami-Dade County at the time of application, and up to the time of hire (unless currently a City employee).

AGE: Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

EDUCATION: Applicant must be a high school graduate or have a GED equivalency at the time of application.

DRIVER’S LICENSE: Applicants must submit a valid Florida Driver’s License (Class E or higher) at time of application. Additionally, a person hired must maintain a Class E without any restrictions on performance throughout employment.  

CERTIFICATION: Must be a current State of Florida Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

TOBACCO USE: Must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application, as evidenced by sworn affidavit. [(Florida Statute 633.34(6)]

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A thorough background investigation will be conducted on those applicants considered for employment. This investigation includes criminal history, driving record, employment history, education verification, and residence verification of the applicant. Applicants must possess “good moral character” as determined under procedures established by the Division of the State Fire Marshal, Florida Department of Insurance.

EXAMINATIONS: Candidates are required to pass both the written examination and the Physical Ability Test (PAT) administered by the City of Miami. More specific information on these tests will be supplied at time of application. Additional points may be awarded to the written exam score with proof of the following:

Veteran Status
Florida Firefighter Certification
Paramedic Certification

ORAL INTERVIEW: An ethnic/racial and gender balanced panel will interview Firefighter candidates that are selected.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Candidates for employment are subject to drug screening examinations. After a candidate receives a conditional offer of employment, he/she must pass a comprehensive medical exam administered by a City designated physician.
