Recruit Training Section
The Training Coordinator designs, monitors,
directs, and supervises both the "In-Service"
and “Recruit Section” programs which were very
active in 2008. We graduated the largest class
ever (53), and are now engaged in training
another 30. Recruit Training accounts for the
majority of training hours, from 1998-2008
approximately 400 firefighter recruits have
graduated and joined the ranks of the
Department.
“In-Service” Training Section The Specialty Field Training Instructor (SFTI)
Team of eighteen (18) members research, create,
and deliver Specialty Training course/drills to
the Emergency Response Division personnel on a
shift basis. The SFTI Team works under the
direction of the Chief of Training and conducted
over 1,800 hours of Specialty Training in 2007
Driver Engineer Section
The Driver Engineer Section is responsible for
the training of Recruit Firefighters, Active
Firefighters, and other City Employees.
Comprehensive driving and operating instruction
is provided to the drivers of Emergency Response
Fire Suppression Apparatus, Special Operations
vehicles as well as heavy Rescue Apparatus and
the light fleet (Automobiles). The Section
participates on the Accident Review Board, and
provides remediation for drivers involved in
accidents. This section also provides Defensive
Driving Courses (Classroom and Hands-on
Training), Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC),
Fire Service Hydraulics & Vehicle Inspection and
Safety courses. It services the Fire Department
by performing quarterly Driver’s License
validity confirmation, Driver Engineer
performance evaluations, Reserve Driver Engineer
Classes, and working on specifications for new
apparatus manufacturing and delivery via the
Apparatus and Equipment Committee.
PAD Program The PAD coordinator monitors the Automatic
External Defibrillation program for the City of
Miami. From 2006 to present, we have distributed
489 AED units to all of the Dade County Schools
and have trained 800-900 teachers how to
properly use this device. We have placed
approximately 750 AED units throughout the City
of Miami community. We conduct monthly CPR
training for City of Miami employees through our
Wellness Program and have taught additional 400
individuals CPR training through their
respective agencies.
Public Education Section
The City of Miami Department of Fire Rescue’s
Public Education Section is responsible for
providing citizens with important life saving
messages in fire and injury prevention and
scheduling truck and station presentations given
by the men and women of the Emergency Response
Division. In addition, the responsibility for
creating a better understanding of the
operations of the Fire-Rescue Department
throughout the community is a major function of
this section. Each year approximately 45,000
citizens in the City of Miami are reached
through group presentations, hands on training
and drills for businesses, community and
educational institutions which include both
adults and children. Additionally, our public
education section hosts a learning station at
the Children’s Fire Safety Festival in both
February and October and reaches an additional
6000 elementary age children. The Juvenile
Fire-setters Intervention Program services
dozens of children and their families by
performing educational interventions and
psychological referrals each year.
EMS Training & Infection Control Section
Our Paramedic Instructor Section revised the
Department’s EMS Protocol Manual and conducted
the EMS Protocol training for our Firefighter
Candidate Class members. Additionally,
in-service paramedic training classes were given
to over 580 Paramedics in the Emergency Response
Division.
Certification Section The Certification Section Officer is
responsible coordinating, scheduling,
monitoring, and documenting all training.
