This past year, the Department looked at
several new ways to provide better service to
the community. Some of these were:
- “First Alarm Territories” were monitored throughout the year and adjusted where necessary to improve response time while also trying to evenly distribute the run load.
- Two new Fire Stations added with a Rescue unit assigned to each to improve response time. The location of these new stations are:
- Upper northeast section of the City
- Between S.W. 22nd Ave. and S.W. 27th Ave. along Coral Way.
- A change in dispatch was made to have private ambulances respond simultaneously with Engine 11 on BLS alarms. This change was to increase the availability and improve the response time of Rescue units.
- Operational Guidelines were reviewed and updated as needed.
- A committee was established to determine if one of our training manuals, the Firemanship Manual should be updated or replaced. After review, it was determined that the Firemanship Manual would be eliminated and be replaced with IFSTA Firefighting Essentials Manual. Articles in the Firemanship Manual that were still of use would be updated and placed in the appropriate manuals on the Firenet.
Other Accomplishments:
- An Accident Review Committee was established to determine which accidents involving Fire Department vehicles were preventable or non – preventable.
The committee would evaluate each accident and determine the type of remedial training necessary to prevent that accident from reoccurring. The committee
would also determine if changes in current procedures were needed or if equipment was available to reduce the number of accidents occurring.
- The Grand Prix of the Americas car race was held in downtown Miami in which the Miami Fire Department was involved with from start to finish. The Fire Department was responsible for providing medical care and fire protection to spectators and race personnel. This was a major undertaking for the Fire Department, with this event requiring approximately 100 personnel and 17 apparatus from the Fire Department each day.
- The Training Division conducted an “Officer Training” course for newly promoted officers.
- The Fire Prevention Bureau amongst many other accomplishments completed all their assigned inspections.
The citizens of Miami and Dade County can continue to be proud of the service and dedication of the men and women of the City of Miami Department of Fire-Rescue.
