- When temperatures drop below 50˚ seek shelter, and stay
away from open, windy and wet areas.
- Wear dry clothing. Wet clothes will allow the body to
lose heat much faster.
- Cover your head with a hat, cap, or other head covering
- since 25% of your body heat escapes from your head.
- Wear layered clothing versus a single jacket. The layers
will preserve heat better.
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages or use drugs which
interfere with the body's ability to regulate
temperature.
- Do not drink coffee, tea, or beverages with caffeine.
Drink warm tea, broth or water, or hot sweetened drinks
such as as cocoa.
- Check heater to be sure it is clean and dust free. Check
heater cords. If frayed, cracked or they feel hot during
use, replace them. Avoid using extension cords. If you
must use one, be sure it is a heavy gauge wire, as short
as possible.
- Keep at least three feet of empty space between the
heater and everything else.
- Do not leave children or pets alone near heaters.
- Turn off heaters before leaving the house or going to
bed.
- If you use a fuel-burning heater, refuel it outdoors.
Turn heater off and let it cool before you try to refuel
it to prevent burns and fires.
- Do not substitute fuels when using fuel burning heaters.
If your heater burns kerosene, do not use gasoline.
- Do not burn charcoal in any enclosed area. If gives off
deadly carbon monoxide gas.
