Preventing Brush Fires

February through May is considered our "dry" season, and with that comes the added threat of wildland and other fires. Brush fires and grass fires are a natural occurrence in the wildland areas, but there are many things we can do to reduce the risk of starting these fires and reducing the threat of damage to homes and property here in an urban environment such as Miami.

  • Keep trash in enclosed receptacles.
  • Do not drive vehicles on dry lawns. Sparks from the exhaust can ignite fires on parched grass or fields. Keep a means of mitigating fires in your vehicle and home, such as a fire extinguisher.
  • Don't toss cigarette or cigar butts on the ground. If you do, you must make sure that the tip is completely snuffed out.
  • Don't toss cigarette butts from your car. Fires along our roadsides have been sparked by cigarettes.
