Department of Capital Improvements and Transportation The Capital Improvements Program (CIP) is a key component to “Building Better Neighborhoods”. The efforts of CIP align with several objectives of the City’s Strategy Map:

 • Provide Excellent Recreational, Educational & Cultural Programs
• Restore, Maintain & Beautify Urban & Residential Infrastructure
• Provide Excellent Public Safety
• Improve Business and Service Delivery Processes

CIP is responsible for the design, construction, and project oversight of capital projects valued over $1 billion through the next five years. Some of these projects are now underway or in the planning stages. They include, but are not limited to, new building construction, renovations, neighborhood street beautification, new park construction, community/cultural centers, athletic/aquatic facilities and major storm drainage projects. Some of the major recreational and cultural projects include the Grapeland Aquatic Park, Little Haiti Cultural Center, Little Haiti Park/Soccer Field and the Melreese Clubhouse & Restaurant Facility. The program also prides itself on recently completing new neighborhood community centers such as Antonio Maceo, Arthur E. Teele, Jr., and Grapeland Community Centers. Other projects include a $37 million Police College, a one-of-a-kind in the nation collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Fire Station No. 11, Dinner Key Mooring Field, Athalie Range Park Field Improvements, and the Dorothy Quintana Community Center at Roberto Clemente Park. Projects that are currently in design include a state of the art Museum Park which will be a visiting home for various tall ships when docked in Miami, a $94 million parking garage for the new Miami Marlins Baseball Stadium, a major renovation of Robert King High Park, Green Lab, Coral Gate Community Center and the Hadley Park Youth Center. Future projects include the design and construction of the Dinner Key Marina Dockmaster’s Office, implementation of the Coconut Grove Master Plan, renovation of Gibson Park, and several pool replacement projects.

As part of the City’s vision to revive the downtown Central Business District, CIP has implemented the DWNTWN Beautification project which consists of the reconstruction of sidewalks, roadways, new street lights and trees with canopies. Other roadway and drainage improvements are the Kinloch, Fairlawn, Northwest, Flagami, and Oakland Grove Storm drainage projects.

In an effort to protect the environment, CIP strives to implement “Green Initiatives” on projects as practical. CIP projects are implemented to improve the quality of life for our residents and we are committed to providing quality services and timely delivery of these projects.
